Different types of Medicare Supplements
People always ask me which supplement should they go with? I always advise people that they need to pick a plan that they are most comfortable with for their health insurance needs along with their financial needs.
There are pretty much three types of Medicare supplements that people can choose from:
A standard plan G
A high deductible plan G
An N Plan
The most expensive of these plans is the standard plan G. This covers everything that Medicare does not cover except for the standard deductible . For 2026 the deductible is $283. So you pay the first $283 and then your plan covers everything else that Medicare doesn’t cover.
The cheapest of these plans is the high deductible plan G. It acts the same way as a standard plan G but you’re responsible for the first $2900.
The plan somewhat in between costs is the N plan. You have the deductible of $283 just like the standard plan G. But in addition to that, you have co-pays for certain things such as a $20 co-pay for a specialist co-pays for an ambulance, etc. Unlike an advantage plan where you lose your Medicare, under this plan you still have your Medicare is accepted by all doctors who take Medicare. The cost of this plan usually falls halfway between the standard plan G and the high deductible G.
When you’re deciding which supplement to go with, these are the factors you need to consider. Are you OK paying more and having more covered? Or are you OK paying less but having to pay more for the deductible?
You always want to make sure that you have a plan that you can cover financially, but the same time you can rest easy at night knowing you’ve got the coverage you are satisfied with for your health insurance needs.
