What do I do if I Lose My Medicare Card?

If you are like most people, and especially if you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you never really need your Medicare card. However, if you get into a situation where you need to change your prescription plan, or change your Medicare Advantage plan, or if you want to switch Medicare Supplement plans, you will need your Medicare card.

What happens if you lose it? How do you replace it?

This is a very easy process. You simply need to call 1-800-Medicar(1-800-633-4227), or contact your local Social Security office and have them send you a replacement card.

If you have an account on Medicare.gov, you can print a temporary card while you wait 3-4 weeks for your new card to be mailed to you.

You should always have your Medicare card tucked away, in a safe, drawer, etc. and have it available if needed, but you do not have to carry it around in your wallet or your purse.

While it’s not something you need daily, it can be a hassle if you can’t find it in a time of need.
