What do I do if I receive a bill for medical services that I thought should be paid?

So, you go to your mailbox hoping to get something good, you open it, and UGH! A bill! We have enough of those, but this is a bill from a medical provider that you thought your insurance had paid. What do you do to get this resolved?

The good news, is that many times, when you receive a bill that you believe should have been paid, or if a doctor’s office has stated it will be covered, there is a good chance you may not have to pay anything.

The very first thing you should do is contact your insurance company. Ask them why a claim was not paid. Many times it is a simple error from the doctor’s office. The bill was coded wrong, or the wording was wrong. Many times the insurance company will re-bill the doctor’s office and get it straightened out pretty quickly.

If this doesn’t work, call the doctor’s office and see how they coded the bill. If you are going in for a physical, and somehow was coded as a medical procedure, this will change how the insurance company pays out. (Yes, this has occurred to my clients in the past.)

And if these two things do not work, you can always file an appeal with Medicare.

Always follow up with the insurance company and the doctor’s office. Be polite, and keep an open line of communication. It may take some time, but it will get resolved, and usually in the patients’ favor. I had a client that was told he would have a $4000 dental procedure be covered, then, was told a month later, it would not be covered. He appealed it, and the insurance paid for it all.

Sometimes it can be a hassle, but if you, along with your agent, will work with this, you can get these issues resolved, and come out ahead.
