What does it mean for doctors to be in network?

This topic has come up more and more recently…

Norm, what does it mean for my doctors to be out of network?

So this really only applies for Medicare Advantage plans.

What happens is that these doctors and/or hospitals have an agreement with each company, such as Humana, Aetna, etc. When these contracts expire, and have to be renewed, these medical facilities and/or doctors have to agree upon a new arrangement, and if they don’t, then they are considered to be out of network with the Medicare Advantage plans.

When this happens, what this means, for the most part, is that unless it is an emergency, you can not see that doctor, or go that hospital with a plan that is considered out of network.

So what are your options?  They are as follows:

1. Find a new Doctor or Hospital.

2. Find a different plan that is accepted by the doctors and hospitals and sign up for that plan.

This happens from time to time, where a doctor or a medical facility fall out of contract with a plan.

They are supposed to send you a letter informing you of this, but sometimes it falls through the crack.

This is why you need to have an agent who will keep up with this information and inform you when this occurs.

After all, that is not a good feeling when you are sick and you can no longer see your doctor because you have the wrong plan.

Stay safe out there and take care,
